No Friday post today, I didn’t have the best day (not food/weight loss related) and don’t really feel like posting about it!

This morning I walked into town for some shopping, not the best walk because it was both humid and overcast most of the way.

In the afternoon, we watched A Perfect Getaway. I wasn’t expecting much of this movie, but enjoyed it in the end.

Food today:

Breakfast: Multigrain porridge with soya milk, cookies & cream whey, and berries. This was really good – I just need my oats / grains to be a little less bland than they come, and these were just right thanks to the flavoured whey.


Lunch: Prawn fried rice (left over from yesterday – I didn’t eat dinner last night)


Dinner: Vegetable pizza with salad

Snacks: Cashew and pecan Bounce ball;

Greek yoghurt with We Are Bear granola and seed mix. Plus a few nuts


Weight: 10 st 1lb (141 lbs) – fairly sure this is because I missed a meal yesterday, and without going overboard I’ve made up for it today so I’m expecting a rebound tomorrow.

Fraught Thursday

Due to noisy work being done on my house from 9 am to 4:30 pm yesterday I never left the house & garden. And I didn’t binge, or even seriously want to! Not bad, for a day with no exercise and lots of frustration I think.

Food today:

Breakfast: All bran with peaches (all out of fresh berries)

Lunch: 10 bean & vegetable soup with a BBQ quorn sausage and a wedge of LC on toast


Dinner: Roasted vegetables mixed with crumbled light feta, buckwheat and some Pomegranate salad dressing – not very exciting, but I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat, changed the menu half a dozen times, then just went for something that would use up some past-its-best aubergine!


Snacks: A serving of raw mixed nuts, a Cashew Cookie Nak’d bar, and a Spirulina supplement ball that I found last time I was in London, plus a Babybel light


Weight: 10 st 3 lbs (143 lbs)

I’ve been thinking about getting a bit more adventurous in the kitchen lately. As much as I love cooking, most of what I do is quite simply variations on my well-established themes, while other things I just avoid, either because they’re fattening / unhealthy – I don’t ‘do’ pastry for instance –or because they intimidate me slightly.

Things that I’ve thought about trying but been too intimidated to go for it (I’m not saying I’m going to do them all, just getting them out there) are:

1) Souffles. In fact anything that involves beating egg whites into stiff peaks, so meringues as well. And angel food cake.

2) Pates

3) Home brew beer

4) Jams and preserves

5) Fudge / toffee

6) Any kind of offal (I hate them all, so M, who doesn’t, goes without)

7) Home-made sausages

8) Pickles

9) Bearnaise / Hollandaise sauce

10) Ice-cream

11) Cooking crabs / lobsters alive – they’ve never done anything to me!!!

12) Sourdough bread

I think that’s about it! Several of the above are really one thing – I don’t make beer, pickles, preserves or jam because I’m put off by the idea of having to sterilise dozens of jars or bottles and then wondering if I did it right or if I just made a big pile of highly toxic crap. The pates suffer from my offal-phobia.  Ice-cream is too much like hard work for this lazy cow – all that beating as it freezes!

Most of these I’m still not ready to tackle, but I am considering digging out my egg whisk food processor to try a savoury souffle somewhere down the line, or maybe getting a sausage-making kit. Have any of you done any of these? Or do any of you have foods you’d try making if you weren’t a little intimidated / scared…?

Fatty Wednesday

Cycled again today, and again kept my walk until the evening. That might have been a bad idea; my knees have been bothering me a bit on the stationary bike and I meant to get some elasticated sports support sleeves or whatever they’re called, but when I rushed to the chemists this evening (getting there 10 mins before closing) I picked up the wrong size… I was in such a rush to get there on time it never occurred to me to measure my knee! I’ll have to take them back and replace them with the next size up tomorrow I guess.

Today’s weather has been quite changeable, between overcast and gloomy and occasional bright spells. It was quite pleasant for some of the walk, so I took a few panoramic shots from the railway embankment…

Food today:

Breakfast: 2 poached eggs on wholemeal toast


Lunch: A massive stir fry with tons of vegetables plus a chicken breast that left me feeling utterly stuffed ALL afternoon! Flavoured it with ginger, garlic, soy and chilli flakes as usual but this time added lemongrass and lemon juice just because – and enjoyed it!


Dinner: A snack pack of vegetable sushi I wanted try and some 10 bean vegetable soup, bulked up with spinach. The sushi wasn’t bad at all, but not a patch on the fishy kind!

Snacks: Greek yoghurt (actually not Greek, it was Onken Set Yoghurt because it was on sale) with raspberries and nuts yum yum

I’ve been trying to resist the processed sweet foods this week (had you noticed? probably not) but now I seem to be getting a thing for nuts (sounds a bit rude <blush>) so I ate rather a lot more nuts than shown above, but still stayed well inside calories and well out of binge mode. Though my fat percentage for the day is waaay higher than normal! I also ate a huge slice of watermelon after the exercise bike.

Weight today: A slightly surprising 10 st 2.5lbs (142.5 lbs). I don’t expect it to be the same (or lower) tomorrow… to be as subtle as I’m capable of, I suspect this is the result of an upset stomach I’ve had for several days… lets just say my body has been forced to do its digesting a lot faster than usual :-(. It seems to have settled down now so no doubt I’ll be heavier tomorrow.

Fishy Tuesday

Spent today waiting in again, for once I didn’t find this too frustrating. Probably because it wasn’t just humid and overcast, but kept raining as well. It brightened up later so I decided to keep my walk for the evening. I had at that point already spent 46 minutes (including warm up and cool down) on the exercise bike, and must have been working harder than usual because my legs started shaking after I got off!

I just got back from my walk into town. It got a lot hotter and more humid again while I was out, unfortunately! It was still nice to get out and about though, I did a little more exploring in the local fields and saw some reasons to feel less regret that the embankment is so overgrown…

Food today:

Breakfast: All bran with peaches and raspberries

Lunch: A new soup with Waitrose 10 bean mix plus lots of vegetables; served with an LC and tomato toasted sandwich


Dinner: Salmon fillet, sweet potato and fennel bulb all cooked in the slow cooker with peas and corn and a few defrosted prawns to boost my protein for the day


Snacks: Greek yoghurt with seeds and nuts;


And a porridge made with rolled oats, spelt, rye, barley, brown rice, wheat and buckwheat flakes (all the flakes were bought in tiny quantities from Whole Foods Market last week so I could try this) and soya milk, with plain whey protein and Linwoods Flaxseeds with Cocoa and Berries stirred in afterwards.



This was enjoyably chewy but tasted very bland and I added some yoghurt after a bit to make it creamier

Today got off to a frustrating start when I drove 32+ miles to a furniture store in search of a chest of drawers – only to find out that it would take ten weeks to come!!! I think they must be growing the tree from seed or something… So I ended up ordering something else online, which I could have done without first driving through endless miles of road-works, following unbelievably slow farming vehicles on winding country roads, and generally wasting my entire morning for absolutely nothing!!! It did distract me from any desire to eat my way through the morning though, I suppose…

In the afternoon I waited for deliveries, and decided to wait till after 6pm to go for a walk, as that’s when delivery men usually finish work for the day. I was hoping it might be a bit cooler and drier, but that proved not to be the case of course, so in the end I decided a bath would be more relaxing – especially as I haven’t had a day without a walk or training session for a couple of weeks now. I do still quite like walking in the evenings though, apart from the fact that there are fewer excuses to go out if the shops and library are closed.

Food today:

Breakfast: 2 Scrambled eggs with dry fried mushrooms, pepper and onion served on toast


Lunch: Chilled watermelon soup (last portion :-( ) and a salad with 2 defrosted quorn sausages I cooked last time I barbecued and an LC sandwich


Dinner: Yum! New stuff galore! I have 2 cookbooks I’ve owned for a while and not really used. Today I decided that had to change. These are the books:

You might find yourself squinting at the above photograph in search of the fried onion and red chilli that was supposed to top the dahl. I have to confess that I forgot all about it till I was already eating the meal – so that didn’t happen, sadly. It was very tasty as it was, but i reckon that would have added a whole new dimension, so I’ll have to try to remember next time! It wasn’t particularly spicy, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will do it again (plus I have a portion of each left to freeze)

How is everybody this hot, sticky Sunday? Fairly uneventful day here, I took a walk early this morning, nowhere new and nothing exciting. The rest of the day was mostly revolving around the TV and a little quality time with M.

Still feeling a bit more myself at the moment. I have nibbled on a bit of extra peanut butter and a few extra nuts on top of those listed below, but nothing that could be described as a binge or even really over-eating. I think maybe I’ll be all right until the feelings of last week are a little more faded ;-)

Always have to find something to whinge about though ;-) I’ve had a niggly headache for the last 3 or 4 days – not constant, but coming back every day. At first I thought it was dehydration while I was away, but I’m glugging water all day long now; then I started wondering about my new glasses (but I got them weeks ago so that’s probably not it…) bit annoying, but hopefully it will clear up fairly soon. As its only a background throb most of the time, at least it isn’t driving me into the chocolate!

Food today:

Breakfast: All bran with peaches and raspberries

Lunch: Cod grilled with seaweed salt served with a small mixed salad and a large mixed grain salad of millet, buckwheat, red onion, sweetcorn, peas and peppers in a bought Pomegranate salad dressing – the fish and the grain salad both exceeded my expectations! (and even though the salad veggies were pretty dull, at least the colours are pretty!!!)

Dinner: Grilled vegetable sandwich and chilled watermelon & pepper soup


Snacks: Greek yoghurt mixed with a teaspoon of all-natural hazelnut butter and topped with nuts and seeds – really liking this combination! (Didn’t think the hazelnut butter added much mind you)


and a babybel cheese; plus the above mentioned extra nutty nibbles

Quiet Saturday

Not much happened today. I walked into town this morning, a rather humid and sticky day but not very sunny



I was relatively happy with my weigh in this morning, given the amount I ate while I was away. I am temporarily much more in the mood for healthy foods and lots of salads and vegetables – not necessarily very exciting for you to read about, but I’m making the most of it while it lasts!

Food today:

Breakfast: All bran with peaches and raspberries


Lunch: Big (rather disappointing) stir fry with tofu marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, dried red chilli, sesame oil, rice vinegar and garlic


Dinner: A huge salad with shelled edamame, sweetcorn and feta cheese, with a chilled soup that was not disappointing AT ALL – 2 grilled red peppers blitzed in the blender with a red chilli, some red wine vinegar, a few basil leaves, one clove of garlic, seasoning – and a huge amount of watermelon! Topped with a garnish of basil leaves and feta crumbles that instantly sank to the bottom ;-)  It was a lovely blend of sweet and spicy, and refreshing with it! I got the recipe from a book, so I’m afraid I can’t provide it in full.

Snacks: A large serving of Greek yoghurt topped with a mixture of raw nuts and seeds

Weight today: 10 st 5.4lbs – about 2 lbs more than before I went to London (145.4 lbs)
